You can’t fix things around the house without the landlord’s consent. Let the landlord know as soon as possible about any damage (intentional or accidental) so they can arrange for its repair.
However, if the damage is likely to cause injury to people or property you can have the repair work done without telling the landlord, so long as you’ve made reasonable attempts to let the landlord know first.  Keep a record of your attempts. The landlord should pay you for any urgent repair work.
