Can my landlord use my money for a different purpose without my permission?

As a general rule, landlords and property managers shouldn’t use money that you have given them for one purpose (e.g. for paying water rates) for another purpose (e.g. unpaid rent), without your permission.
Bond money in particular can’t be held and used by the landlord. The law says that bond money *must* be lodged with Tenancy Services until the end of the tenancy. If your landlord uses money you gave them for something without your permission, contact Tenancy Services for advice.
