The Tenancy Tribunal is less formal than other courts. Hearings are public, and either party can take support people with them. You can bring along a friend or family member but, if they’re in the courtroom with you from the start, they can’t be a witness or say anything.
Normally, you and the other party will represent yourselves. Parties may only have a lawyer or a representative appear on their behalf in special cases e.g. if the dispute is for over $6000; if the other party agrees; if the other party has a lawyer representing them; if you have a disability or are under 18; or if there are complex issues involved. You can also contact the Tenancy Tribunal to ask about your hearing and whether you can have a lawyer or other representative with you.
